Purchase protection and extended warranty

protection · 4 min read

Purchase protection

Covers theft or accidental damage within 90-120 days of purchase. Typical limit $10,000/claim, $50,000/year. Always require a police report for theft.

Extended warranty

Most premium cards add 1-2 years to the manufacturer warranty on purchases made on the card. Save receipts and manufacturer warranty paperwork.

Return protection

Some cards (Amex Plat, Chase Ink Preferred) offer return protection if the merchant refuses to take something back. Usually up to $300/item, $1,000/year.

How to file

Every issuer has a "benefits administrator" that handles claims — not the issuer directly. Amex uses eClaims, Chase uses Card Benefit Services (cardbenefitservices.com), Citi uses their Card Benefits tool. File within the time limit (usually 60-90 days from the incident).
